The History of the Wetumpka Depot Players, Inc.
In the spring of 1980, a small group of local people with varied skills and
diversified occupations decided to form
a community theatre. Some of the people were interested in making money to
restore a historic building, an old depot; some were interested in developing
their construction and technical skills; others were interested in acting and
directing. The group selected Harvey as their first play, gave the group a name,
The Wetumpka Depot Players, and as it is said, "The rest is history!"
Despite many limitations, the players persevered and added many "tried and true
" plays such as Dracula, Frankenstein and The Mousetrap. The group added
conveniences as money allowed. The WDP also teamed up with a local drug
prevention agency and joined forces to produce summer children's shows, thereby
forming the Junior Depot Players.
Through the 1980's there were outstanding performances of such hits as The Odd
Couple, Arsenic and Old Lace, You Can't Take it With
You, Father of the Bride and Bus Stop. In 1989, when the group performed
The
Foreigner, the players were presented with a new problem. Due to the popularity
of the show, the performances were sold out every night! The show took a hiatus
for the holiday season, and returned for an encore run. As the saying goes, this
organization was "on the map." Patrons from all over central Alabama were
enjoying the Wetumpka Depot Players! The players stretched their wings and even
began performing musicals, including Smoke on the Mountain. The milestone which
probably gave the WDP its most challenging problem was the loss of space in
which performances had been held. Other locations were made available, however,
the historic Elmore County court house was the venue for Inherit the
Wind. The
Wetumpka Performing Arts Center was used to stage shows as well, including,
Nunsense and The Music Man.
The most important milestone to date happened in December of 1999 when the WDP
incorporated as a nonprofit organization. A former grocery store was purchased
and renovation began. The patrons, financial contributors, volunteers and actors
are to be commended for the progress of The Wetumpka Depot Players, Inc.
